Hornbills Ready for Opening Test Against Two-Time MBL Champions NS Matrix

Selangor Hornbills will make their MBL Pro League debut on Friday, 6 November, taking on two-time champions NS Matrix Deers at Karisma Arena in Seremban in what promises to be an intriguing opening encounter.

The Hornbills face one of the league's most accomplished clubs in their first outing. NS Matrix have established themselves among Malaysia's leading basketball teams, winning back-to-back MBL titles in 2022 and 2023–24. With national team talent, experienced international recruits and a track record of competing at the regional level, the Deers will provide a stern opening test.

While the Hornbills are newcomers to the professional league, they arrive with ambitions of their own. The club has assembled a young local squad supported by three international signings, with an emphasis on building a competitive team capable of challenging more established opposition.

The Hornbills will look to their local core, including guards Teoh Yi Kang, Brian Tang Kia Wee and Tan Jian Wei, alongside forwards Yap Zhi Wei, Keshmendip Singh Gill and Lim Wan Seong. International additions Wendell Lewis, Marshawn Blackmon and Julio Claver De Assis Afonso provide further options as the team prepares for the demands of the MBL.

Under Head Coach Adrian Wong, the Hornbills have spent the pre-season developing their combinations and preparing for the campaign, including a recent training camp in Taiwan. Friday's encounter will be the first opportunity to see how those preparations translate against one of the country's established professional teams.

NS Matrix's pedigree and home-court advantage make them formidable opponents, but the Hornbills are not heading to Seremban simply to make up the numbers. Despite the relative youth of the squad and the limited professional experience of several players, there is confidence within the team that they can compete and make their presence felt.

The opening game will offer an important early indication of the Hornbills' progress, but the objective goes beyond measuring themselves against the defending pedigree of their opponents. They will be looking to put themselves in a position to challenge for the result.

For the Hornbills, it is the beginning of a new chapter in the club's history, and an opportunity to show what this young team can achieve against some of the best opposition Malaysian basketball has to offer.
